Accessing government information
The Right to Information (RTI) is the Queensland Government's approach to giving the community greater access to information. The Queensland Government has made a commitment to provide access to information held by the government, unless on balance it is contrary to the public interest to provide that information.
New legislation replacing the Freedom of Information Act 1992 came into effect on 1 July 2009, namely the:
The Right to Information reforms aim to make more information available, provide equal access to information across all sectors of the community, and provide appropriate protection for individuals' privacy.
Searching for information
Before making an RTI request, you should check to see if the information is already available. The disclosure log lists information which has been released in response to RTI access requests, while our publication scheme describes and categorises information routinely available from the Department of Environment and Heritage Protection.

Right of review
If you are dissatisfied with the department’s decision on your access application you can apply to have that decision reviewed.
An application to have a decision internally reviewed must be made within 20 business days of the date of the letter communicating that decision. Please contact Right to Information Services for more information.
You can also apply to have our decision reviewed by the Information Commissioner.
