More and more people are choosing to live close to their favourite beach. One quarter of all Queenslanders live within three kilometres of the ocean. So it's essential we know as much as possible about the natural forces which affect the coast and the people who live nearby.
To collect this vital data the department operates an extensive system around the coast.
Information from wave recording, storm tide monitoring, hydrographic surveys and visual monitoring, form a valuable historical database which is used to identify how nature and humans have changed the coast over the years, and indicate future trends.
A range of wave and storm tide data was collected when tropical cyclone Yasi approached the Queensland coast on 3 February 2011.
