Recycling signs and artwork

The Queensland Government has prepared a range of recycling artwork that is free to download from the Department of Environment and Heritage Protection website. The artwork has been designed to help people enhance existing waste management systems with recycling messages or introduce a new recycling system.

We encourage users to apply the new recycling artwork to recycling and waste bins to help users separate the correct materials for recycling, and to minimise contamination of the recycling stream.

Adopting the new recycling artwork will help spread a uniform recycling message across the state and ensure visual consistency and identity, enabling Queenslanders to 'Do the right thing, use the right bin' wherever they happen to be.

The Do the Right Thing Use the Right Bin tagline was developed jointly by the PSF and the Queensland Department of Environment and Heritage Protection and supported by the Australian Packaging Covenant.

Terms and conditions of use

By downloading artwork from this site you signify your consent to EHP's terms and conditions. You agree not to adapt, alter or create a derivative work from any of the recycling artwork contained in this site other than to include your organisation's logo.

If you do not agree to these terms and conditions, please do not proceed to download artwork from this site.

Frequently asked questions

Can we incorporate our own organisation's logo into the artwork?

Artwork has been prepared to enable organisations to insert their own logo alongside the Queensland Government logo. An in-house graphic designer should be able to make these changes for you.

Can we change the size?

The artwork can be scaled up and down to suit application as long as the proportions stays the same. Just let your supplier know what sizes you would like the stickers and signs to be before you obtain a quote.

Where can we order stickers from?

There are companies that can produce digitally printed full colour stickers and coreflute signs (with eyelets). You will need to ensure that vinyl is suitable for the application. For example, vinyl suitable for high UV environments or vinyl used for applying onto metal surfaces - ask your supplier to quote on a range of vinyls so you have all the information to hand. You will also need to consider who will apply the stickers to ensure their longevity. Your supplier or your waste/recycling contractor may be able to assist with this.

Why is there so much variety?

Different recycling contractors, councils and materials recovery facilities accept different combinations of materials for recycling across the state. If you are in doubt about what materials can be recycled in your area please contact your local council or recycling contractor for further information.

How do we apply the stickers to the bins?

Depending on the size and shape of the sticker, the number of people required to apply the sticker can vary. As a rule, one person can apply A4 and A3 stickers and two people should apply A2 and bigger, unless the person is experienced in handling large stickers.

Best results can be achieved by:

  • first, always cleaning the surface to which you are applying the sticker
  • using a spray bottle to wet apply the stickers with a mixture of 100 parts water/1 part washing up liquid.
  • wetting the bin surface down first with the spray, then wetting the front of the sticker (printed side), and place it carefully onto the application surface (this helps you confirm were exactly it will be attached).
  • peel the backing sheet of the sticker and spray with liquid, then turn the sticker over in one slow and steady motion and place where desired.
  • using a felt-edged squeegee, work the water out from the top to the bottom, then side to side, slowly removing any bubbles as you go.
  • Once the initial sticker is in position, spray the surface and go over it again with the felt-edged squeegee.

What are the standard colours for recycling and waste?

An Australian Standard has recently been developed for mobile bin colours (AS4123.7-2006 mobile waste containers - Part 7: colours, markings and designation requirements). The colour designations for common waste categories are listed in the table below:

Category Bin colour Bin lid colour
Waste Dark green or black Red
Recycling (mixed) Dark green or black Yellow
Paper/Cardboard Dark green or black Blue
Organics (including food and garden organics) Dark green or black Lime Green

You may wish to rejuvenate your existing bin stocks and should discuss your needs with your waste and recycling contractor to reflect the Australian Standard colours.

Waste stickers

We want to encourage people to focus on the recycling as the first option - waste is the default option only when a material cannot be recycled. Standardised stickers for waste can be found below:
