New Saraji Coal Project (lapsed)

New Saraji Coal Pty Ltd was the proponent for the New Saraji Coal Mine Project. New Saraji Coal Pty Ltd is a subsidiary company of New Hope Corporation Limited (which also trades as New Hope Coal Australia).

The proponent had proposed to develop a greenfield underground coal mine producing up to 10 million tonnes a year of coking coal for export.

The project was being assessed by a Voluntary Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) under Part 1 of Chapter 3 of the Environmental Protection Act 1994. Draft terms of reference (TOR) for the EIS were available for public review from Monday, 19 May 2008, until Monday, 1 July 2008 and comments on the draft TOR were forwarded to the proponent for consideration and response. However, it is understood that shortly after that ownership of the New Saraji Coal Mine was transferred from New Saraji Coal Pty Ltd to BHP Billiton Mitsubishi Alliance (BMA). No response to comments has subsequently been received. Consequently, as of 29 August 2008 the EIS process for the project was suspended under section 67 of the Environmental Protection Act 1994. The proponent’s draft TOR has since lapsed because twelve months has passed since suspension of the EIS process and the proponent has not responded to comments on the draft TOR.
