Mt Chalmers Gold Mine

The departments of Environment and Heritage Protection (EHP), and Natural Resources and Mines (NRM) have been jointly managing the key environmental issues at the former Mt Chalmers Gold mine since Affinis Pty Ltd was placed into liquidation in December 2014. EHP is also supported by other government agencies including the Department of Science, Information Technology and Innovation (DSITI) who are providing scientific advice on technical aspects of site management.

The ongoing focus of site management is to prevent the discharge of contaminated water from the site and EHP is currently in the process of purchasing an improved pumping system to reduce the likelihood of releases from the site. Installation and commissioning of the upgraded pumping system will be undertaken prior to the next wet season.

EHP will continue to work closely with NRM and other agencies, to develop a long-term rehabilitation strategy for the site to address key safety and environmental issues.
