Major threats to fauna species

Key finding

Sixty-eight major threats have been identified that impact on Queensland threatened fauna. The threats affecting the most species are ‘inappropriate fire regimes’, ‘clearing of vegetation’ and ‘inappropriate grazing regimes’.

A range of pressures put species at threat of extinction within Queensland. Under the Queensland Government’s Back on Track species prioritisation framework, major threats were identified for more than 270 priority flora and fauna species.

Back on Track identified 68 major threats that impact on Queensland threatened fauna, most significantly:

  • ‘inappropriate fire regimes’ affect 74 species
  • ‘clearing of vegetation’ affect 54 species
  • ‘inappropriate grazing regimes’ affect 52 species.

‘Ferals—pigs’ and ‘urban development’ also affect a significant number of fauna species (41 and 31 species respectively).

Reassessment of species under Back on Track has commenced using a new methodology. As a consequence of the new methodology, ‘climate change’ has been identified as a threat for a number of fauna species.
