Key finding

Total motor vehicle travel (cars, trucks, buses), expressed as total vehicle kilometres travelled, shows continued and sustained growth over time.

Total motor vehicle travel (cars, trucks, buses), expressed as total vehicle kilometres travelled, shows continued and sustained growth over time. The amount of travel directly affects emissions from motor vehicles—i.e. when travel goes up, emissions go up as well, in theory. New emission reduction technology likely offsets—or even reverses—these trends for specific air pollutants, but not for greenhouse gases.

In 2011, the total vehicle kilometres travelled was 79 million kilometres. In 2006, it was 66 million kilometres. More people and more vehicles on the road drive the total vehicle kilometres upwards.
