Interstate household waste received

Key finding
In 2014-2015, about 45,000 tonnes of household waste generated interstate was transported to Queensland landfills for disposal.
Household waste (municipal solid) is waste generated by domestic activities. It includes waste collected from households via kerbside services, from public place bins, or self-hauled by residents to council facilities.
Data on general waste from interstate sources was collected for the first time in 2013. No long-term trend information is available.
Private landfills received about 135,000 tonnes of waste generated interstate in 2012-2013.
In 2014-2015 Queensland received about 45,000 tonnes of household waste (mostly from neighbouring council areas across the border) up from about 42,000 tonnes reported in the previous year.
Along with the other waste streams, contaminated soil and regulated waste are also transported to Queensland from interstate. Contaminated soil contains hazardous materials, and regulated waste includes material such as asbestos, pesticides, a range of waste chemicals and chemical compounds, and other industrial wastes as listed in Schedule 7 of the Environmental Protection Regulation 2008.
