Key finding
In 2014-2015, about 22,000 tonnes of commercial and industrial waste generated interstate was transported to Queensland landfills for disposal.
Commercial and industrial waste is produced by business and commerce and includes waste from schools, restaurants, offices, retail and wholesale businesses and manufacturing industries.
Data on general waste from interstate sources was collected for the first time in 2013. No long-term trend information is available.
In 2014-2015, about 22,000 tonnes of commercial and industrial waste was received from interstate sources. This was about 9,000 tonnes down on the previous year.
Along with the other waste streams, contaminated soil and regulated waste are also transported to Queensland from interstate. Contaminated soil contains hazardous materials, and regulated waste includes material such as asbestos, pesticides, a range of waste chemicals and chemical compounds, and other industrial wastes as listed in Schedule 7 of the Environmental Protection Regulation 2008.
