Key finding

Emissions from the agriculture sector have increased 6% between 2005 and 2014 mainly due to an increase in livestock numbers.

Queensland’s agriculture sector greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions varied in response to climatic and economic conditions but overall they have grown slowly from 18.4 million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent in 1990 to 20.4 million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent in 2014.

In 2014, Queensland was the largest source of agricultural GHG emissions in Australia with the growth in emissions primarily due to an increase in livestock numbers. Livestock enteric fermentation accounts for 82% of Queensland’s total agricultural emissions. Other sources of emissions in 2014 included:

  • management of agricultural soils
  • manure management
  • application of urea.

Field burning of agricultural residues, rice cultivation and liming are not included as their emissions contribution is very small.
