Waste facility characterisation survey

In 2011 a Waste Site Characterisation Survey was conducted across Queensland. The survey was aimed at identifying all waste facilities, including landfills and waste transfer stations, and their on-site operations, processes and infrastructure.

The survey was the state’s first comprehensive survey of waste facilities and operations.

The survey:

  • provided a snapshot of waste disposal sites and waste transfer stations’ activities
  • provides comparative information to benchmark waste management infrastructure
  • provides an opportunity for councils to review their regional waste management infrastructure.

The quality of data collected was variable across the state and the report provides a greater understanding of not only infrastructure profiles, but also provides an opportunity to compare with other areas and increase the scope for greater regional collaboration.
